Lake Manyara is a compact Rift Valley park with groundwater forest, acacia woodland, lake-edge habitat and strong birdlife. Overview

Why Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara is a compact Rift Valley park with groundwater forest, acacia woodland, lake-edge habitat and strong birdlife. It fits naturally between Arusha, Tarangire and the Ngorongoro highlands, and is particularly useful for travelers who want habitat variety rather than another long day on open plains.

Best time to considerJune–October and December–March; birding can be rewarding year-round

A different landscape

The park begins with dense groundwater forest before opening into woodland, floodplain and lake-edge country below the steep Rift Valley escarpment. This rapid change of habitat is the main reason to include Manyara on a longer Northern Circuit itinerary.

Wildlife and birds

Elephant, giraffe, buffalo, baboon, hippo and numerous antelope species may be seen. The park is also widely associated with tree-climbing lions, although any specific sighting is unpredictable. Birders value the mix of forest species, raptors, waterbirds and seasonal migrants.

Route planning

Manyara is easy to combine with Karatu or the Ngorongoro highlands. It works well on arrival or departure days when the route needs a shorter game-drive block, but it can also be given a full day for birding and slower observation.

Accommodation choices

Most travelers stay outside the park in the Mto wa Mbu/Karatu corridor or on the Rift Valley escarpment. This gives access to a broad range of lodge categories and keeps the next day’s route toward Ngorongoro or Serengeti efficient.
