Mara River Crossing Safari Guide

The Mara River crossing season in Northern Serengeti is one of Tanzania’s most sought-after safari periods. It is also one of the easiest experiences to describe badly because the crossings are natural, unpredictable and spread across a large river system.

The Mara River crossing season in Northern Serengeti is one of Tanzania’s most sought-after safari periods. It is also one of the easiest experiences to describe badly because the crossings are natural, unpredictable and spread across a large river system.

When to go July through October is the broad planning window. Exact herd position changes year to year, and herds may cross multiple times between Tanzania and Kenya.

Why three or four nights matter A herd can reach the river and wait. It can turn away, cross somewhere else or split. One night gives very little flexibility. Several nights allow the guide to monitor different crossing points while still spending time with resident lion, leopard, cheetah and other wildlife.

Camp location Northern Serengeti camps vary significantly in drive time to particular river sections. During peak season, choosing the right camp location can matter as much as the level of luxury.

Expectations A crossing is never guaranteed. A well-planned northern safari should still be rewarding if the river remains quiet because the broader ecosystem has excellent resident wildlife and beautiful landscapes.
