Northern Tanzania supports far more than classic big-game viewing. Within a single safari circuit, birders can work montane forest, alkaline lakes, acacia woodland, river systems, swamp, open plains and volcanic highlands.
Arusha National Park Arusha National Park adds habitat that the drier western parks do not provide. Forest, Momella lakes and highland vegetation can be useful for waterbirds, forest species, raptors and primates. It is a logical first full day for a dedicated birding itinerary.
Tarangire and Manyara Tarangire’s woodland and wetland mosaic supports a very wide range of species, while Lake Manyara combines forest birds, raptors and water-associated species. These parks reward slower driving and repeated stops rather than a large-mammal-only approach.
Serengeti and Ngorongoro The Serengeti adds grassland specialists, raptors, bustards, storks and many seasonal migrants. Ngorongoro adds highland species and waterbirds on the crater floor. From November through April, Palearctic migrants increase diversity across the circuit.
Guiding style A birding guide needs to understand that identification, calls and habitat matter as much as mammals. Afrika Porini can structure a private safari with slower drives and more time in habitats that general safari itineraries often pass quickly.
